About

Dams are among some of the most imposing and complex structures to be found in civil engineering, and they have long played an important role in economic development and prosperity. Their primary functions include the storage of water for irrigation and energy production for local communities, protection against floods and other natural disasters, and the supply of water in times of drought. The aim of this book, which is primarily destined for practicing engineers and master’s students, is to clearly present the principal concept and design elements that determine dam engineering. It gives a detailed overview of a safety concept based on three key pillars and of the different types of concrete and embankment dams, as well as their impact on the environment, their foundations, and various surveillance and maintenance issues. The content is enhanced with examples that reflect the internationally recognized expertise of Swiss engineering in the design of dams.
