In his 36 years with the RCMP he has served in a range of duties and commands at various locations throughout Canada and abroad with the United Nations in Kosovo (1999-2000) and the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (2008-2009). Prior to joining the RCMP in 1974 he served six years within the Canadian Armed Forces as Military Police and with Canadian Airborne Regiment at various locations in Canada and Cyprus (1974). He has a diverse background in Operational Policing, Operational Support, Administration and Senior Executive Management. Chief Superintendent Summerfield is currently seconded to the Geneva Centre of the Democratic Control of Armed Forces as the Manager of the Police Program, which provides strategic direction in leadership and management of police services and governance. He is married to Julene and they have four children, Coady, Anne Marie, Annette and Tansi.
